Preschool identification is an area of controversy. Many educators maintain that at the preschool level it is too early to make determinations of a child's potential giftedness or learning disability. Others feel that it is possible for these traits to be identified in the very young. This 1996 article from the Learning Disabilities Association of America Early Childhood Committee provides information for parents concerned about possible developmental problems in their preschooler. The article has a chart showing common characteristics of preschoolers at risk for later identification as learning disabled.
